Popular Southampton Tile Materials and Styles

Brick tiles (or brick slips)

Brick tiles are a great alternative to an exposed brick wall. Depending on the styling and colours, an authentic finish can give off an industrial feel, or rustic farmhouse vibes, adding warmth and character to a room.

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain is a type of ceramic although the clay is denser and fired at a higher temperature, making it more hard, durable, scratch and stain resistant.
For this reason, they are often the choice for heavy usage areas, such as hallways, where they need to withstand the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Porcelain tiles look great in a variety of colours, as well as special effects, such as stone and even wood.

Ceramic tiles

Known for their durability, moisture resistance and low maintenance, ceramic tiles are super versatile. Made from fired clay, they are used to adorn countertops, backsplashes, decorative walls, and floors to name a few.

Handmade tiles

If you are looking for something unique, to add a creative flair to your home or business space, or to up your decorating game, handmade tiles are for you. They add an element of personalisation and luxury that is hard to reach with generic mass produced tiles, and are sure to get a “wow” from your friends, family, patrons of your business, or whoever so may see your tiles in passing! There are many eye-catching hand painted designs, rich coloured glazes and unusual shapes. Handmade tiles are a real artisan feature that will lift your space to new levels.
natural stone tiles

Natural stone tiles

A step above synthetic or manufactured stone tiles; natural stone tiles are cut from real minerals
elements such as slate, limestone, marble, sandstone, granite and travertine. This is one way to bring that fresh, mountain feel into your home for an elevated style. Natural stone is porous and so will need to be sealed after installation.

Plain tiles

Sometimes less is more, and plain tiles are a perfect example of this.
They can add an air of sophistication to any bathroom or kitchen, as well as being easy on the eye they are easy to clean, and adaptable for many environments.

They remain a popular choice for sleek designs.

Mosaic

Mosaic tiles are intricate in their design and will become a clear impressive feature in any property. Because of this design and the level of difficulty in manufacture, they are on the more expensive end of tiling options. For this reason, many people choose to install mosaic tiles for the floors or walls of small spaces.

What are the benefits of tiling?
Aesthetically appealing

Tiles bring a level of elegant beauty into your property which cannot be achieved with other methods such as wallpaper or painting. The texture of tiling is much more interesting; whether it’s a shiny and smooth glazed finish, or a complex hand painted design, or uneven stone which is rough to the touch, it adds a structural layer to a room or space.
Hygienic and easy to clean
Depending on the type of tile you choose, we will discuss the sealing options with you to ensure that your tiles are completely water resistant. Especially relevant for the kitchen and bathroom, tiles are much easier to wipe down, whether they are covered in water or other spillages such as food in the case where they make up your countertop. This is also the reason tiles are used as a backsplash.
They protect your wall, whereas the paint would peel and flake from the moisture and acidity of substances being constantly splashed. Tiles are fired in kilns at temperatures up to 1,400 degrees Celsius which ensures they contain no volatile organic compounds. This means they contribute to healthier air quality thus reducing the risk of health issues which could arise from a flooring such as carpet or vinyl.
Low maintenance

Because of their durability, you do not need to do much to keep your tiles looking pristine. If they are kept clean, they will stand the test of time.
Cost effective

Because tiles require such minimal upkeep, this makes them cost effective in the long run. Of course, the initial cost for tiling can vary immensely due to the vast range of tiles available on the market, however when you account for their longevity, their value becomes clear. In addition to being one of the most cost-effective flooring options available, we must also consider the value which is added to a property by a good tiling job.  It is an impressive feature which could add thousands to the value of your property.
Variety and versatility
Tiles can be used in such a range of environments that the possibilities are relatively limitless compared to other materials for flooring or walls. Tiles can be used inside and outside, for flooring, walls, ceilings, or in fact almost any surface. They can be used in homes, as well as commercially in shops, restaurants, pubs, bars, hotels, schools, hospitals, public buildings, and other types of property too.
They add a timeless style, devoid of “fashion”, and can adjust the feeling of any room, whether the aim is for simple everyday use or for a heightened luxurious ambiance.
The sheer variety of tiles on the market means that there is an option of all budgets, depending on what you are looking for. You can create something truly unique, or follow a simple design, the choice is yours.
Perhaps you are wondering, "what tile pattern is best for my kitchen?" or "which tile pattern is best for a small room?".
There are many tile patterns which achieve different effects depending on how you use them.
Herringbone
Tiles are in an interlocking V shape, reminiscent of herringbone fish skeleton.  creates sense of flow or direction across room. Looks great with contrasting grout. This style dates back to Roman empire and was used for infrastructure of their roads.

Chevron
Rows of interlocking parallelograms to create zigzag pattern. Using contrasting grout can strengthen the design and become focal point of any room.
Diamond (Diagonal)
Similar to stacked/grid/straight lay however tiles are turned 45 degrees to create diagonal diamond shape. This works fantastically in small rooms to open them up and make them look larger, when a traditional straight lay would make the room appear boxed in and smaller.

hexagonal blue and grey tiling pattern
Geometric, hexagon and other unique tile patterns
Think Victorian era intricate patterns seen in hallways and stately homes with complimentary border around the edge of the main pattern. Geometric patterns also include hexagons, or other atypical or custom tile shapes, and can be used as a bold backdrop, or as a stylish way to enhance space with visual depth. Create an interesting feature to draw the eye in.
Basket weave
Literally looks like a basket weave, two or more rectangular tiles stacked to make a square then rotated.

sand coloured windmil tiles
Pinwheel (hopscotch) and Windmill
The windmill is four rectangular tiles arranged around a square tile in the centre. Similar to pinwheel which is four large square tiles around a much smaller square. Contrasting colours will work best here.
Grid (stacked, or straight lay)
Simple yet effective, timeless style. Can be jazzed up with alternating colours (example to create checkerboard pattern) or tiles in different hues.

brick tiles also known as brick slips for authentic look
Offset/staggered brick (running bond)
No longer for simply industrial vibes, this pattern is becoming increasingly popular in indoor spaces. Can be done using rectangular or square tiles, and basically mimics how bricks are laid
Versailles (French)
This is one of the most tricky to get right, as it requires careful planning of the pattern to ensure best results. Made up of both rectangular and square tiles which will need to be designed specifically for this pattern.
